A real-life field of dreams.
Picture a yellow tapestry in the middle of nowhere:
A sunflower field, right in the heart of the desert, where theoretically nothing should exist.
We're growing a real-life "field of dreams"...and we need your help to start.
Get, Grow, Give
Here's how it works:
Receive one of our free Sunflower Kits.
Grow it from seed at your home. You'll be part of our first cohort, growing alongside other volunteers around the world.
Then, once your sunflower is mature enough, send the it back to the land...and we'll plant it in the "Tiny Forest" field.
It's laughably small. (And that's the point.)
I've been thinking a lot about how change actually happens.
Not in grand gestures or perfectly planned systems.
But in small, quiet, and stubbornly consistent acts of love and care.
Change happens thanks to "ordinary" people like you and me. People who decide that something beyond themselves matters.
The sunflower is the happiest plant we know. It follows the light. It cleans up the soil. It feeds the butterflies, the bees, and the birds.
And it grows tall...SO TALL! Taller than it has any right to be. All from a seed no bigger than your fingernail, to beyond the height of any human on Earth.
We only have one goal for this project:
To grow hundreds of sunflowers...one person at a time.
"If a sunflower can figure out how to find the light… we can, too.
Whether you have a seasoned green thumb or have never kept a houseplant alive, we've got your back.
Grow one sunflower, at home, at your own pace. We'll send you everything you need to guarantee it thrives.
And when its ready? We'll bring everyone's sunflower together: into a real field, where we'll plant alongside everyone else who grew one, too.
Yes, even if you've never grown anything before.
This is for you if:
🌻 You’ve never kept a plant alive
🌻 You live in an apartment
🌻 You want to do something small, but meaningful
🌻 You’re tired of doomscrolling and want to reconnect with nature
You only need one small pot, a window, and a few minutes a day.
From a single seed
to a field
Our vision is to bring people together all over the world in a quiet act of revolution: everyone growing a single sunflower in their own little corner of the world. And when the time is right? We plant them, together.
We made it simple on purpose.
First, Sign Up
Leave your details below. I'll reach out personally (not AI) and we'll get you everything you need.
Choose A Sunflower Kit
Everyone gets sunflower seeds and an instructional guide. You can add soil, a terra cotta pot, a reservoir container, two earthworms, and more.
Receive Your Sunflower Kit
We'll send you your kit along with a step-by-step care guide to guarantee a successful sprout.
Grow Your Sunflower, Morning By Morning
Give your seeds a gentle spray over your morning coffee. That's it. These little guys can grow in the desert without anyone taking care of them. They'll do just fine in your home.
We transplant together
Once your sunflower is strong enough, we'll bring it to the field and plant it side-by-side, with several others. Quite literally a field of dreams.
A word about
For Every Star, A Tree
For Every Star, A Tree (forEST) is a grassroots nonprofit growing a Tiny Forest in the heart of the desert.
We've been growing since 2021. Our belief? "Earthcare over Doomscrolling." That's why our work centers on reconnecting people to the land. We do this through stewardship, restoration, education, and communiy care.
This sunflower project is our next chapter. Instead of asking you to come to the land, we're bringing the land to you...one small pot at a time.
Grow at home. Be part of our community.
And when the time is right?
We plant, together.
Our Seed & Stewardship Approach
Why focus on "resilient" plants rather than strictly "native" species?
Ecosystems are dynamic, and our changing climate requires adaptable solutions. After years of hands-on planting in the challenging climates of the Mojave Desert and Antelope Valley, we’ve learned that focusing exclusively on a strict "native vs. non-native" dichotomy can sometimes hinder practical conservation. Instead, our goal is to foster biodiversity by planting climate-resilient food sources that can successfully grow and provide immediate, reliable nutrition for local wildlife facing habitat loss.
How do sunflowers benefit local birds and ecology?
Sunflowers are ecological powerhouses! We focus on them because they offer incredible, well-documented benefits to both birds and insect pollinators:
- Crucial Summer Nutrition: During hot, arid summer months, blooming sunflowers provide a vital oasis of nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies.
- High-Energy Bird Food: According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, black oil sunflower seeds are a premium, high-fat, high-protein food source.
- Supporting the Food Web: By attracting pollinators, sunflowers also support local insectivorous birds in the Antelope Valley.
What are Heirloom and Open-Pollinated seeds?
We believe in the age-old tradition of seed saving. We strictly use open-pollinated and heirloom seeds. Because these seeds are naturally pollinated (by birds, insects, or wind), you can harvest the seeds at the end of the season, plant them next year, and they will grow into the exact same type of resilient plant. This allows our community to build self-sustaining gardens.
Do you use engineered or "terminator" seeds?
Absolutely not. We are deeply committed to sustainable, natural growing cycles. While you may have heard of "terminator seeds" (technology engineered to make a plant's offspring sterile), due to a global moratorium, this technology has actually never been commercially sold. However, many modern commercial seeds are patented hybrids, meaning saving them is legally restricted or biologically unreliable. We bypass this entirely by exclusively sourcing non-GMO, 100% open-pollinated, heirloom seeds. When you plant with us, you are planting seeds of life that can be saved, shared, and replanted for generations.
